ACT III

Part of the castle belonging to Rejent

The Notary was sitting at the table in his room and writing a complaint against the Squire

about beating the bricklayers. Two of the bricklayers were at the door. The Notary wanted them to say that they were beaten and hurt by the Squire and they couldn't work anymore and earn money for their families.

The bricklayers said that the Squire's servants only pushed them. They wanted  their money for their work, but the Notary didn't want to pay them. The notary pushed the bricklayers out of the room.

The Notary was angry with the Squire and he wanted to take the revenge.

Waclaw returned home. His father told him to marry Podstolina.

When Waclaw said that he loved Clara, the Notary said:

"No, you won't marry Clara. You will marry Podstolina."

This was his revenge because the Notary knew that the Sqiure  wanted to marry Podstolina and the Squire would be really angry. Waclaw protested and was afraid of the terrible Squire’s revenge. But the Notary was calm and  said :

"Let's Heavens will on earth be done

Acclaimed by all, opposed by none."

He didn't want to listen to his son's despair and requests. He wanted only the revenge.

Papkin came into  the Notary's room. First, he was scared and very polite.

Then he became very brave and cheeky. He said :

"I am Papkin, the Lion of the North,

famous captain and chevalier,

and so on and so forth."

He  wanted some wine and when he got it, he drank a bit and complained about the quality of the wine. Then he said :

"The Squier wants to challenge you to a duel."

When the Notary  heard what Papkin said, he called  his servants to throw Papkin out.

Papkin got really scared, but he repeated that the Squire  wanted to fight with the swords the next day.

The Notary said :

"Tomorrow is the  wedding. The Squier is going to marry Podstolina."

Papkin said:

"Don't worry. He loves Podstolina very much, but first he wants to fight."

The Notary was very happy and he left the room. He wanted to write a letter to the Squire. Papkin was desperate. He asked Podstolina:

"My Dear Podstolina you must marry the Squire. He is going to get very angry. He is going to kill me."
