The content of “The Revenge” has its source in a real conflict. Well, when in 1828 Fredro married Zofia Skarbkowa, received in dowry half of the old castle in OdrzykoÅ„. The second one belonged to another family. Browsing the papers of the received property, he found the trial files of the owners of the castle from the 17th century. They were Piotr Firlej and Jan Skotnicki. Firlej occupied by the lower castle, while Skotnicki the upper one.

Firlej, as the voevoda, considered Skotnicki to be an unworthy neighbor and teased him as much as he could. In revenge Skotnicki directed gutters to the lower castle. The voevoda attacked the workers repairing the wall and destroyed the gutters that flooded him. Of course, they ended up in the tribunal. Skotnicki won, but he put an end to the conflict, when the son of the voivode Piotr Firlej got married with castellan’s daughter, Zofia Skotnicka.
