ACT II

Squire's room/ Cześnik's room

Papkin and Waclaw came to the Squire's room. Papkin was very proud because he had a prisoner.

He said how brave he was when he fought with the bricklayers.

When the Squire saw Waclaw, he said:

"I don't need a prisoner. Let him free!"

Then Waclaw asked:

"Sir, please, make up with the Notary. Stop the stupid fight!"

The Squire answered angrily:

"Between the pair of us goodwill?

Not till the sun above stands still -

Not till the seven seas run dry,

Will he and I see eye to eye!"

The Squire left the room. Then Waclaw took out a purse of money and said to Papkin:

"Look, I have some money for you. Take it and let me stay here. I am the Notary's son. I love Clara and I want to be close to her."

Papkin was worried because he had a rival now, but he wanted the money very much, so he let Waclaw stay.

At the same time Papkin met Klara and he told her that he was in love with her.

Clara didn't  love him and she knew what to do. She said:

"If you want to marry me, you mustn't speak for six months.

Then you must eat only bread and you must drink only water for a year."

Finally, she wanted him to catch a crocodile.

"If you want what's best for me,

bring me a crocodile, my love."

"Go to the Notary and tell him that we are going to have a duel."

The Squire promised to give Papkin a lot of money if he did that. Papkin was very unhappy because he was afraid of the Notary. At the same time he wanted the money, so he went to the other part of the castle.
